Created a new line of PNDs (personal navigation device) with optimized physical and digital interaction. The principle for the design was uncompromised usability, which meant reduced cognitive friction, a panoramic display proportion, optimized 3-ft interaction and a “map=home” UI.

Responsible for Research, Industrial Design and UI direction.

Won the 2009 Red Dot Design Award that year.

Shure Sound-Isolating Earphones

Shure Sound-Isolating Earphones

Shure, the industrial-leading high-end audio product maker that produced performance earphones for music professionals, asked us to design a new line of earphones aimed to bring their sound-isolating technology to the consumer market.

Working closely with Shure’s audio engineers, we created the signature “bean” design that mimics the anatomy of human ear while ensuring a proper fit for sound quality. This design allowed the earphone to be worn comfortably either straight or over the ear.

The design language remains a signature part of the Shure product family after more than a decade.

Motorola W215 & W208

Motorola W215 & W208

My very first mobile phone design came on the heels of Razr’s enormous success. I took the Razr design language and brought it to life in a low-cost candy bar form factor that’s hugely popular in Asia and the Emerging Market. The final design achieved a premium finish while keeping the cost down. The first round of production kicked off in 2006 when the initial order came in at 20 million units.

Beyond Design

Beyond Design

My experience at Motorola spans mobile phones, accessories, home electronics and new computing platforms such as mobile tablets. The most important skill I’ve gained was knowing how to work with engineers. Designers often bring user-centric perspective to problem solving. However, in order to push user-centric vision forward, we have to bring key stakeholders along - engineers, marketers and operations.

My ability to mobilize a multi-functional team towards a shared vision is the essential skill that enables me to thrive in a large corporation.
