Walmart List Vision

Walmart List Vision 2024

Existing Walmart List experience focused on basic functionality

Vision - Essential tools at your fingertips, making planning for shopping fun and effortless

Background

The current list experience is manual and lacks inspiration, requiring users to invest significant time and effort in creating and managing their shopping lists. Users must manually find and add items, plan their shopping, and track their needs. Beyond these basic tasks, coordinating with others adds an additional layer of effort. As a shopping tool, it focuses heavily on fundamental functionalities but falls short in delivering the fun and inspiration that modern shoppers expect.

This is the anchor for our vision, which centers on one core philosophy - It’s not about making a list; it’s about shopping. And shopping should be fun, effortless, and social. We set out to craft a best-in-class, native shopping experience for any occasion, powered by List.

My Role

I spearheaded and directed this design-driven vision, leading a team of 3 UX designers, 1 Content designer and 1 UX Researcher. I led the team to kick off the design sprint with a research study focusing on uncovering unmet needs of the shoppers and how they use list to facilitate shopping. Leveraging these insights, I led the team in defining key customer problems and exploring various approaches to address them. Through structured brainstorming sessions, we generated a wide range of ideas and synthesized the most promising ones into a cohesive, end-to-end user experience.

Throughout the process, I provided creative direction during daily work sessions, ensuring alignment and quality across the team’s designs. Additionally, I assembled the final presentation and created animation prototypes to bring the vision to life. Finally I presented vision to my cross-functional partners and Walmart Executives from Consumables, Hardlines and Softlines business, generating strong enthusiasm for its potential.

Impact

This vision helped Walmart Business and Product teams move beyond conventional thinking by showing how we could transform a utilitarian product into a delightful, end-to-end shopping experiences that customers will truly enjoy. Since then, I’ve worked closely with the Product team to integrate key elements of this vision into the 24-month roadmap. The first set of features is on track for launch in Q1 2025.
