Walmart Registry NorthStar Vision

Simplify registry building by providing rich content, clear guidance and easy choices.

Background

Walmart has been falling behind its competitors in the US Registry market due to years of underinvestment. Understanding the long-term value of Registry users for Walmart, Design team under my leadership, in collaboration with Business, Product, and Engineering partners, worked together to secure executive support for investing in Walmart Registry. 

My Role

I led the design team in crafting a Northstar vision that inspired the cross-functional team and persuaded the Walmart Executive team to allocate resources to Walmart Registry over the next two years. I led a team of 3 UX designers, 1 Content designer in a 2.5-week design sprint to create this holistic vision and presented it to the Walmart CEO and executive team. Subsequently, I worked with cross-functional partners to translate this vision into a 24-month roadmap. Since then, I’ve led the design team to design, test and launch multiple 0-1 features from this vision.

Impact

Secured a 24-month funding and resource commitment for Walmart Registry and shaped the roadmap for the next two years. In Sept 2024, we launched the Registry Explore tab and Registry Checklist tab after A/B test showing positive lift in Registry GMV and Add to Cart count. In Oct 2024, we launched Holiday Wishlist just in time for the holidays, a brand new feature built on the new Registry framework from the Registry vision. The Holiday Wishlist outperforms all other Registry types on Walmart. With additional features scheduled to launch in the upcoming quarters, this Northstar vision highlighted the impact of Design in influencing business decisions and generate positive business outcomes.
